Kindergar-ten Readiness
The academic success of children in later years depends heavily upon their kindergarten readiness. The first few years of education and preparedness are the most crucial to establishing a solid foundation. During this period, children develop primary skills in reading, counting, and social interaction. From these skills, children can adapt to school systems and learn successfully. At Reach Higher Shasta, we have supported the development of two resources to help improve kindergarten readiness: the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot and the Next Stop: Kindergarten Booklet.
Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot
The Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot is an electronic, application-based assessment. Through the Snapshot, teachers and families can learn more about their child’s literacy and numeracy development, social and emotional development, and physical development at one key point in time. The Snapshot is administered by teachers early in the school year to capture specific facets of what children entering school know and can do. Findings are intended to be used formatively at the classroom and school levels to support instructional planning and at the district level to better understand any changes that may emerge over time in the developmental readiness of Shasta children at school entry.
If you are a teacher, visit the KRS Assessment Login Page to begin using the Snapshot or email nst@shastacollege.edu to access your account.
Next Stop: Kindergarten Booklet
In partnership with First 5 Shasta, Reach Higher Shasta presents the Next Stop: Kindergarten Booklet. Currently, the booklet focuses on the ages directly before Kindergarten and maps out important steps for Kindergarten readiness. These steps include social-emotional skill development, enrolling a child in Kindergarten, and talking to a child about starting school. Adding additional ages will keep parents focused on education throughout the first years of development and promote Kindergarten readiness.
